Zamboanga City implements a door-to-door campaign to combat dengue
While instances of dengue hemorrhagic fever continue to be reported in a number of the city’s villages, the City Health Office (CHO) has allocated workers to carry out the local government’s anti-dengue campaign.
Employees on job orders for coronavirus disease 2019 are among the individuals tasked with maintaining the anti-dengue campaign (Covid-19). To educate locals on dengue control and prevention, they run a house-to-house campaign in several barangays, particularly those with dengue cases that have been reported.
Because there are no more documented COVID-19 cases, “we are using them in other projects such as our anti-dengue push,” said Christine Lim, CHO health education and promotion officer, in an interview on Thursday.
Focused group discussions are another way that ongoing education initiatives are carried out, according to the speaker, at the barangay level.
68 of the city’s 98 barangays have recorded a total of 363 dengue fever cases since January 1, according to CHO data, with no fatalities having been reported to date.
Mercedes (26), Putik (17), Baliwasan, Boalan, and San Jose Gusu each have 13 dengue cases. Guiwan, Pasonanca, Tetuan, and Tumaga each have 12 cases. Divisoria, Lunzuran, and Sta. Maria each has 11 cases. Calarian, Sangali, and Zone 1 each have 10 cases.
Records from the Department of Health-9 revealed that 3,884 instances of dengue fever were reported in the city in 2022, or 971 occurrences on average every quarter. 27 fatalities were reported last year.
The virus that causes dengue infects humans when infected mosquitoes bite them.
The CHO chief, Dr. Dulce Amor Miravite, underlined the recommendation that residents use the “4S” approach to stop the spread of illness. The “4S” method stands for “search and destroys mosquito breeding sites,” “self-protection,” “early consultation with doctors or other health workers,” and “support fogging or spraying in hotspot regions.”
