Koreans attend the kite festival in Sipalay City
The ninth Burangoy Tourism Kite Festival, which culminates this weekend in Sipalay City, the “Kite Tourism Capital of the Philippines,” is being attended by a group of South Korean culture aficionados.
The festival’s public art piece was presented on Friday, and kite exhibitions began in advance of the competition at Poblacion Beach on Saturday.
The South Korean visitors are the first-ever international kite flyers to take part in the city’s kite festivities, according to supervising tourism officer Jerick Lacson.
“South Korean kite flyers and festival directors are joining us this year. This is a part of the city administration’s aspirations, under Mayor Maria Gina Lizares, to elevate the festival to the status of an international event, he continued.
The Korea Kite Federation’s president and director of planning, Jaiduck Ryu, as well as Ki-Beom Jung, chairman of the Chungnam Cultural Heritage Content Cooperative, Junghwan Kim, chairman and vice chairman, and Wonki Hwang, director of the Korea-Philippines Festival and Cultural Exchange Association, are all part of the delegation.
The event will begin with a kite procession from Sipalay City Park to the “Wow Sipalay” signage on Saturday. Poblacion Beach will then host a kite-flying competition.
Figure Kites, which feature Philippine animal figures, and 3D Geometric Kites are both open to everyone without age restrictions. Flat Kites, which feature a local design known as “guryon,” and Barungoy or Flying Fish Kites, which showcase 2D or 3D flying fish-themed kites, are only open to individual participants who are based in Sipalay.
The biggest, longest, and most inventive kites will receive special prizes.
The festival’s name is a combination of the terms “burador,” which means “kite,” and “barungoy,” which is the local term for flying fish. It lasts until March 26.
