Tacloban council adopts a law against plastics.
A resolution that limits the use of plastic bags and the usage of polystyrene as packaging material has been passed by the city council.
The city’s contribution to the government’s initiative to minimize the amount of solid trash, according to the ordinance’s author and chair of the city council’s committee on environment and natural resources, Councilor Aimee Grafil.
Grafil stated in an interview on Monday that after Mayor Alfred Romualdez signs the ordinance, it would be completely implemented.
The ordinance, according to Grafil, “aims to reduce the amount of solid waste produced in the city over time, promote the use of indigenous or reusable bags, and give communities opportunities for livelihood and productivity, upholding the health, safety, and welfare of both the public and the environment.”
Once implemented, businesses in the city will be required to encourage clients to use their own reusable bags to transport their purchases. Reusable or eco-friendly bags must be offered for sale.
Every business must set up a dedicated lane, or “green lane,” to accommodate consumers who bring their own reusable bags.
Additionally, the regulation forbids the usage of party flags at fiestas and other gatherings.
Establishments that break the law will be penalized PHP2,000 for a first offense; PHP5,000 for a second offense and a six-month operating suspension; and PHP5,000 for a third violation and a one-year operating license cancellation.
Individual offenders face fines of PHP1,000 for a first violation, PHP3,000 for a second offense, PHP5,000 for a third crime, and up to six months in jail, according to the judge’s discretion.
