US President Joe Biden signed an executive order on Monday prohibiting the use of commercial malware that could endanger national security by federal organizations.

According to Biden’s directive, the US must adopt policies to ensure the proper use of commercial spyware, safeguard its information systems and interests, and prevent foreign governments from abusing it.

Because of this, he declared, “I hereby establish as the policy of the United States Government that it shall not make operational use of commercial spyware that poses significant counterintelligence or security risks to the United States Government or significant risks of improper use by a foreign government or foreign person.”

The directive mandates that federal departments and agencies refrain from using commercial malware operationally when they assess that doing so poses serious counterintelligence or security dangers to the nation.

According to the White House, commercial spyware has multiplied recently with little regulation and a considerable risk of abuse.

It claimed that an increasing number of foreign countries have used this technology to support oppression and permit violations of human rights.

“Authoritarian regimes are hardly the only ones to abuse these potent monitoring capabilities. Democratic governments have also had to deal with discoveries that individuals operating within their systems targeted their citizens with commercial spyware without the necessary legal license, safeguards, or oversight, it was said.
