Rice producers are advised to plant early and utilize heat-resistant plants.

To prepare for the El Nino phenomena anticipated in the last quarter of 2023, rice farmers in Western Visayas are encouraged to sow early or choose crops that can withstand high temperatures.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) officer in charge, Regional Executive Director Engr. Albert Barrogo stated in an interview on Wednesday that the scarcity of water will likely last longer because the dry season will last from January to May 2024.

In order to give a recommendation on the planting calendar and enable local government entities to adapt to climate change, Barrogo stated that they will convene their regional technical working group.

He added that the planting season in the area often starts in May or June and that one of their recommendations was for farmers to plant early, especially in irrigated areas.

44 percent of the 322,000 hectares of rice fields in the region, according to data from the DA Regional Agri-Fisheries Information Division, are irrigated.

The goal, according to Barrogo, is to release the available seeds early so that farmers can begin planting in the final week of April or the first week of May.

In addition to palay, he continued, farmers are also urged to plant cash crops or heat-resistant root crops.

In order to learn about technology that may be employed to enhance farming, he also advised farmers to visit their research facility at Barangay Hamungaya in the Jaro area.
