Iloilo City prepares for a secure Lenten celebration.

The local administration is prepared to put into action its “Oplan Semana Santa” for a secure observance of Lent the following week.

Over 18,000 pilgrims and tourists are anticipated to sail by sea from Iloilo to the neighboring province of Guimaras on Good Friday.

Following the epidemic, face-to-face activities for this year’s “Semana Santa” have resumed, according to Darwin Papa, chief of the Rapid Response Division of the Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO).

“Throughout the years, we have noticed that Semana Santa attracts a sizable audience. A lengthy line formed to enter Guimaras due to the approximately 18,000 people that attended Semana Santa in 2019, he remarked at a press conference.

During Holy Week, Guimaras hosts activities that draw large crowds, such as the “Pagtaltal,” which is a recreation of Christ’s Passion.

Papa stated that the Oplan Semana Santa seeks to prevent terrible occurrences like stampedes or maritime accidents brought on by the confluence of sizable people.

The city’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will be staffed by members of the Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine Coast Guard, Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO), and Public Information Office, according to Papa, and will begin operating on April 3.

48 fire engines, 12 ambulances, and 7 rescue vehicles will all be on standby.

EOC incident commander Jeck Conlu stated that they will request permission for passengers to depart from Iloilo bound for Guimaras at 4 a.m. from the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA). instead of 4:30 a.m. as usual. schedule.

The Philippine Coast Guard will be in charge of the entire berthing area. To prevent delays, passengers must purchase their tickets and sign the manifest aboard the updated vessels, as permitted by MARINA, Conlu stated.

Four roll-os, roll-off vessels, and a total of 16 renovated boats will transport passengers from Guimaras to Iloilo City and vice versa.

To provide security and maintain peace and order, the ICPO will station personnel in 57 locations throughout the city, including the “parola” (lighthouse) terminal.

Conlu stated that in addition to the Parola Wharf, they will also keep an eye on other points of convergence in the city, particularly on April 9 when Easter Sunday will be observed.
