Believers urge balance rest and reflections throughout Holy Week.

Officials from the Catholic Church reminded the faithful on Friday not to forget the actual meaning of Holy Week, which begins the next week.

Father said. According to Jerome Secillano, executive secretary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines-Public Affairs Committee (CBCP-PAC), people who are planning a trip should strike a balance between rest and reflection in honor of the yearly religious event.

In a phone chat with reporters, he advised: “Make sure there is a balance in all these physical relaxation activities and the spiritual ones.

There is a time for the beach and a time for church, the Catholic priest observed. “If they can go to the beach, why can’t they go to the church also?” he asked.

He said that while the Catholic Church recognized that the general population, particularly those who work, also needs time to unwind during the extended holiday, they also needed to carve out time to consider their relationship with God.

Although they have the freedom to unwind, Secillano remarked, “We do not ask them to simply stay in their homes… They should still attend such liturgical activities.”

The Diocese of Pasig has meantime urged the faithful to observe Holy Week in a “eco-friendly” manner.

The Diocese’s Office of Ecology published 13 suggestions on social media to help people observe Holy Week without harming the environment.

To reduce emissions, it asked people to use public transportation, bicycle or walk to the Visita Iglesia on Maundy Thursday.

The Bishop also asked the faithful to refrain from using disposable paper or plastic during the customary giving or sharing of food known as Caridad and to instead use reusable containers for the traditional Pabasa or Reading of the Passion of Christ.

Summer vacationers who plan to travel outside of the city are urged to do it in a plastic- and trash-free manner.

The Diocese further urged people to visit churches and shrines without leaving any trash behind; one could also take a “green” Via Crucis (Path of the Cross) by picking up trash as they go.

The faithful are also advised to use locally grown flowers and plants to adorn the floats for the Santo Entierro (Holy Interment) on Good Friday using mercury-free and energy-efficient LED lighting.

Also, it urged people to contribute worn clothing and other useful items to the Segunda Mana charity program of Caritas Manila instead of using pyrotechnics, firecrackers, or balloons to welcome the Resurrected Christ on Easter Sunday.

The Pasig Diocese advised the faithful to spend “meaningful bonding time” with their families if they choose to remain in their homes.

The celebration of Holy Week, the holiest week of the Christian liturgical year, lasts from April 2 through April 9 (Easter Sunday). During this time, Catholics pray, fast, and ponder.
