Japan’s foreign minister requests China release a national who is being held

In a meeting with his Chinese colleague on Sunday, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi requested Beijing to swiftly free a Japanese individual who had been imprisoned.

The Japanese foreign minister Hayashi’s meeting with Qin Gang marked his first trip to Beijing in more than three years. The two competing Asian heavyweights are looking for common ground amid escalating regional conflict.

According to a corporate spokeswoman, an employee of Astellas Pharma Inc (4503.T) was imprisoned in China for an unspecified cause a week ago. According to Japan’s foreign ministry, five Japanese nationals are now being held in China, two of whom have already been prosecuted and convicted.

The recent imprisonment of a Japanese national in Beijing prompted a protest by me, Hayashi told reporters. “I made a strong point of our view on the topic, including the early release of this national,” he added.

A statement from the Chinese foreign ministry quoted Qin as saying that China would “address (the situation) according to the law”.

According to Hayashi, China has been tasked with creating a fair and secure business climate while Japan is requesting openness regarding the legal proceedings pertaining to detentions. He made no more mention of China’s response.

Yukiko Okano, the deputy press secretary for the Japanese Foreign Ministry, said to reporters on Sunday, “This happened when the Chinese government is trying to promote Japanese investment to China, and we see a discrepancy there.” Hayashi had brought up this issue during meetings in Beijing, she added.

As China’s military action increases, particularly its cooperation with Russia and its maritime presence in the East China Sea, the Japanese minister also underlined to Beijing the serious worries Tokyo has about this development, he said.

We both reaffirmed the value of keeping the conversation going on topics like national security, according to Hayashi.

On the “importance of ensuring peace and stability in the Taiwan strait,” Hayashi claimed he spoke with Qin. Taiwan is “the core of China’s vital interests,” according to Beijing, which stressed that Qin cautioned Japan “not to interfere in the Taiwan issue or undermine China’s sovereignty in any way.”

When questioned about Beijing’s account, Okano responded, “Japan’s position has not changed, not with this remark, and not in recent years.

While China claims Taiwan as its own territory, tensions have been on the rise. China has never denied using force to seize control of Taiwan. Beijing’s claims are rejected by Taipei’s democratically elected government, which maintains that only the island’s citizens have the power to determine its future.

In August, Japan also filed a diplomatic grievance when five ballistic missiles fired by the Chinese military landed in its exclusive economic zone close to the Senkaku Islands in Japan and the Diaoyu Islands in China.

Qin cautioned his counterpart “not to play accomplice to an evildoer” after Tokyo announced export curbs on semiconductor manufacturing equipment on Friday, following the U.S.

The limits are consistent with similar policies taken by the US and the Netherlands to limit China’s capacity to produce cutting-edge technology.

The restrictions, according to Hayashi, “are not intended towards any single country.”

Despite their differences, China, Japan, and South Korea decided to resume trilateral negotiations, according to Hayashi, who referred to the decision as “an important achievement” from his meeting with Qin.

Hayashi continued, “We decided to maintain close communication at all levels, including the leadership and foreign ministerial levels.

The first bilateral summit in nearly three years took place in November at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) conference when Chinese President Xi Jinping and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida met.
