The US and South Korea agree to prevent nuclear threats from North Korea.
A new agreement that tries to dissuade North Korea from utilizing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles was announced by the United States and South Korea on Wednesday.
The agreement was reportedly signed while South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol paid a state visit to the White House, according to the Washington Declaration.
According to the statement, the United States and South Korea “are committed to peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific, and the measures we take together are in furtherance of that fundamental goal.”
The resumption of US nuclear-armed submarines docking in South Korea for the first time in more than 40 years is one of the initiatives the two parties decided upon during Yoon’s visit.
The Washington Declaration stated, “The United States commits to make every effort to consult with the ROK on any potential employment of nuclear weapons on the Korean Peninsula, consistent with the U.S. Nuclear Posture Review’s declaratory policy, and the Alliance will maintain robust communication infrastructure to facilitate these consultations.”
After the discussion between Biden and Yoon, the White House issued a statement in which Yoon reaffirmed his nation’s “longstanding commitment” to the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty.
According to the two presidents, a new Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) was also established to “strengthen extended deterrence, discuss nuclear and strategic planning, and manage the threat to the nonproliferation regime” presented by North Korea.
The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, North Korea’s official name, will be met with a swift, overwhelming, and decisive response. “President Biden reaffirmed that the United States’ commitment to the ROK and the Korean people is enduring and ironclad and that any nuclear attack by the DPRK against the ROK will be met with a swift, overwhelming, and decisive response,” it said.
The resolve of the Biden administration to “extend deterrence to the ROK is backed by the full range of US capabilities, including nuclear,” according to the statement.
“Going forward, the United States will further enhance the regular visibility of strategic assets to the Korean Peninsula, as evidenced by the upcoming US nuclear ballistic missile submarine visit to the ROK, and will expand and deepen coordination between our militaries,” it continued.
The Extended Deterrence Strategy and Consultation Group were two standing groups that the two nations also decided to reinforce. The president of South Korea said that his nation would provide the “full range of its capabilities” to the joint defense posture of the US and South Korea alliance.
It said the United States and the ROK would stand together in the face of any threats to their shared security. President Biden and President Yoon also continue their close consultations on additional measures to strengthen extended deterrence.
To pursue their “shared goal of achieving the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula,” Biden and Yoon also decided to continue “steadfast” in their pursuit of engagement and negotiation with North Korea without “preconditions.”
