Fishermen from Oriental Mindoro will receive training in “farm tourism”

A recent oil spill off the coast of Naujan town extended to at least nine other coastal communities in the province, and the Department of Tourism (DOT) has announced training possibilities for employees whose livelihoods were affected.

Edwin Martin, director of the DOT’s Public Affairs and Communications Office, stated in an interview on Tuesday that “farm tourism” is a livelihood activity that can be carried out away from the coast.

Martin noted, however, that the training opportunity, under the title “Farm Tourism: Urban Farming with a Filipino Brand of Service Excellence,” is being made available to inland farmers as well as to displaced fishermen.

“It (farm tourism) can be seen as an alternative livelihood that they (fisherfolk) can do while the oil clean-up is ongoing, but this can eventually open up new job opportunities beyond the waters,” he continued.

Martin referred to farm tourism as a fusion of the agricultural and hospitality sectors, when visitors are treated to farm tours while staying at bed-and-breakfast inns or pension homes on the same property.

In the meantime, DOT 4-B (Mimaropa), in collaboration with the local administration and the Agriculture Tourism Institute, is launching a training program for farm tourism in the seaside town of Gloria.

In addition to Gloria, additional oil spill-affected communities in Oriental Mindoro are expected to receive the training program, he said.
