Malacaang announced on Friday (Manila time) that President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. will go to London on Thursday night (US time) to further develop the economic ties and trade relationship between Manila and London.

After a busy but extremely successful five-day official visit to Washington, DC, Marcos announced he would meet with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, according to a press update from the Presidential Communications Office (PCO).

As reported by UK Ambassador Laure Beaufils, the PCO stated that Marcos had been invited to London for the grand coronation of Britain’s King Charles III on May 6.

“I will meet with their new Prime Minister, Prime Minister Sunak, up to makapag-usap kami kung mayroon bang pagbabago sa canyang pag-iisip sa pag-partner ng UK at saka ng Pilipinas,” Marcos said in a press conference at the St. Regis Hotel in Washington, DC.

“Ganun din ang sasabihin niya na dapat papatibayin natin sa palagay ko. At the same time, the UK’s economy is in dire straits, so perhaps this should be the message we should be sending when deciding whether to engage in commerce or engage in diplomacy. We may possibly talk about ways to increase commerce while the UK economy is struggling.

The President said that his family will arrive at Gatwick Airport, where he would use the occasion to review some “lessons learned” by airport staff and put them to use in enhancing the country’s main airports.

Normally, Gatwick is not used as a gateway, but this time, I will check the airport’s operations to see if there are any lessons learned and best practices that can be applied in the Philippines.

Marcos has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing Manila’s airport operations to assure convenience and support the nation’s tourism industry.
