As El Nino looms, the NIA is preparing support for farmers.

In light of an impending El Nino phenomenon in the next months, the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) and other government partners are preparing to support local farmers.

Acting NIA administrator Eduardo Guillen stated that continued collaboration with irrigators’ associations, the Department of Agriculture (DA), and the Department of Public Works and Highways is taking place in a Laging Handa briefing on Tuesday.

“We’re expecting to be able to provide plenty of help if El Nino will really hit us,” Guillen added. “Inaasahan po natin na marami tayong maitutulong ngayon.”

He claimed that the Ilocos Region and possibly other areas of Luzon might be affected by El Nino, a meteorological phenomenon that causes dry spells or droughts, based on data from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

He pointed out that El Nino might not significantly impact Mindanao.

He claimed that an alternate wetting and drying mechanism would be used to conserve water and boost agricultural productivity.

“We can increase the amount of water we send to an area by 20% if we practice this, and this will lead to higher yields for farmers,” he said.

According to him, this approach might also allow farmers to obtain carbon credits that permit the emission of a specific amount of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases.

He stated that solar-powered water pumps would be distributed in places plagued by dry periods or droughts.

“Because of our coordination with the President, we have access to funds for solar pumps in highways,” he added. “Dahil doon sa coordination ng ating Pangulo, pati iyong pondo ng highway sa solar pumps, puwede na po namin iyong ma-access.”

He said that the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Department of Labor and Employment could offer assistance through their cash-for-work program Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers in the worst-case scenarios it is difficult to produce crops.

These programs will assist farmers by paying farmers for tasks like desilting canals or other labor-related tasks.

He said that the nation’s National Rice Program is prepared to give farmers hybrid seeds with two times the yield of inbred seeds to guarantee the nation will have an ample food supply.

The DA may also assist high-value crop farmers by giving them free inputs, he added. “At the same time, iyong mga farmers po natin dito sa high-value crop section ng DA, mabigyan din sila ng free input sa high-value crops,” he said.

The weather service has stated an 80% chance of an El Nino developing between June and August that might endure until the beginning of next year.

This meteorological phenomenon makes it more likely that there will be periods of below-average rainfall, which could result in droughts or protracted dry spells.
