Cervical cancer claims the lives of 12 Filipino women every day: DOH

According to the Department of Health (DOH), cervical cancer—the second most common malignancy among women between the ages of 15 and 44—kills at least 12 Filipino women every day.

According to Aleli Annie Grace Sudiacal, assistant regional director of the Department of Health (DOH)-Metro Manila Centre for Health Development, cervical cancer, or cancer that affects the lower and narrow end of the uterus, is brought on by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which is contracted during unprotected sexual activity.

If a woman has a reoccurring HPV infection, she may develop cervical cancer.

She stated this during an information caravan in Las Pias City: “There are also data stating that those who have had cervical cancer if you look at their history, are the ones who had early sex life and/or had multiple sexual partners.”

Other causes of cervical cancer include having a weakened immune system, smoking, and breathing secondhand smoke. Getting pregnant at least four times is also a risk factor.

There are 39.6 million women in the Philippines who are 15 years of age or older and at risk of acquiring cervical cancer, according to data from the HPV Information Centre.

According to current figures, 4,052 women die from the disease each year and 7,897 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer.

Next to breast cancer, cervical cancer is the second most common malignancy in women nationwide. According to Sudiacal, it is also the second most common cancer in women between the ages of 15 and 44.

Women could be checked for cervical cancer using a pap smear and visual examination with acetic (VIA) acid.

“Pap smear is quite pricey; the VIA that is done in health centres would work,” she added. “Pap smear is quite pricey; the VIA done in health centres would work.”

According to her, the DOH aims to check women for cervical cancer when they are 20 years old and older.
