At least 75 farmers from the Surigao del Norte towns of Sison and Tagana-an, as well as Remedios T. Romualdez in Agusan del Norte, have finished a six-day capacity building course on good agricultural practices for banana production, which ended on Wednesday.

The farmers were the beneficiaries of this year’s second phase of the banana production project implementation under the agency’s Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) program, according to a statement released on Thursday by the Department of Agriculture (DA) 13 (Caraga).

Soon, the SAAD program will give each of the three towns’ farmer groups a PHP1.4 million project package, for a total of PHP4.2 million.

Each of the groups involved in the project will get planting materials for bananas, fertilizer, and other agricultural inputs.

The DA-13 stated that through evaluating the appropriateness of the area through soil analysis, clearing, and land preparations, the farmers “learned the practices in establishing banana plantations.”

The recipients received instructions on selecting quality planting materials, planting techniques, applying fertilizer, and controlling pests.

The DA-13 stated that managing and maintaining the plantation, which includes weeding, replanting, watering, particularly during the dry season, and pruning, was also considered.

The beneficiaries are required to prepare the areas in their respective barangays where the project will be implemented after receiving their training.

One of the requirements for the release of the project’s other components this year is the preparation process.
