On Thursday, President Yoon Suk Yeol declared an end to nearly all coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) limitations, including the requirement for obligatory isolation, effectively classifying the illness as endemic.

The necessary seven-day isolation time for Covid-19 patients would be decreased to a recommended five-day period, according to Yoon during a Covid-19 response meeting.

Additionally, he stated that the PCR test-upon-arrival recommendation will be dropped and that the indoor mask regulation will be eliminated everywhere except for hospitals with rooms for hospitalization.

The new policies will go into effect on June 1 when Covid-19’s national crisis level is changed from “serious” to “alert.”

As the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters met in the president’s office, Yoon declared, “I am happy that our people will reclaim their everyday lives after three years and four months.”

He thanked front-line medical staff, persons employed in the health sector, and government officials, saying, “This was made possible because of the dedication and efforts of many people.”

More than all, I want to express my gratitude to our workforce for its active participation in antiviral security measures.

Days prior to the announcement, the World Health Organization had deemed the termination of Covid-19 a “global health emergency.”

Yoon stated that the government would continue to financially support Covid-19 testing and treatment for the time being and take all necessary precautions against potential pandemics by putting in place a science-based response system.

Additionally, he promised to improve international cooperation, expand the nation’s capacity for vaccine production, and build a comprehensive post-Covid-19 strategy that would exploit societal shifts brought on by pandemics as future growth engines.
