Index crime decreased by 11% between January 1 and May 13: PNP

In the first five months of 2023, index crimes decreased by 10.59 percent, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr., the head of the Philippine National Police (PNP), stated in a statement on Monday that 13,469 index crime occurrences were reported between January 1 and May 13, which is fewer than the 15,064 crimes perpetrated during the same time in 2016.

The data stated that from 13.87 in 2022 to 12.69 this year, the monthly index crime rate was reduced by 8.51 percent.

Focus crimes, such as murder, homicide, bodily harm, robbery, theft, rape, and carnapping of vehicles, also saw a 10.66 percent drop from 14,990 cases in 2022 to 13,392 cases in 2023. However, incidents of bodily harm saw the largest drop, dropping by 25.68 percent from 2,142 incidents in 2022 to 1,592 cases in 2023.

The consistent application of numerous policies, such as increased police visibility, intelligence-driven operations, community-based programs, strengthened partnerships with other agencies, and improved crime reporting and monitoring systems, according to Acorda, is responsible for the incidents’ ongoing decline.

According to Acorda, the anti-drug campaign saw a similar pattern, leading to the seizure of illegal narcotics with an estimated value of PHP5.68 billion and the detention of 22,826 drug offenders in 17,202 operations.

On Monday, the League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) staged the “Pammadayaw” at Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, where Acorda received recognition.

The PNP had advocated for “serbisyong nagkakaisa” (service with unity), or public service that is united in its determination to offer everyone, regardless of social status or economic standing, equal access to justice and protection.

Acorda also pledged to lead the PNP with honor, integrity, and dedication while working to make the Philippines a safer, wealthier, and more united nation.

He emphasized the PNP’s five-point plan, which includes enhancing integrity, boosting personnel morale and welfare, enhancing aggressive and honest law enforcement operations, improving information and communication technology capabilities, and increasing engagement and connection with residents.

To achieve the aim of a safer and more secure Philippines, he urged the LMP to work with the PNP to undertake important projects.

Acorda extended his gratitude to Nicomedes Dela Cruz Jr., the mayor of Bacarra, as well as to the personnel of the Ilocos Norte Police Provincial Office, local government agencies, and non-governmental organizations, who helped him throughout his career.

Acorda was raised and completed his elementary and secondary education in Ilocos Norte, where he was born.
