Bamboo presents commercial potential to areas affected by the oil spill.

The efforts made by several agencies to introduce bamboo cultivation as an additional source of income for communities in this province devastated by a recent oil leak have been praised by a private sector think tank for the agriculture industry.

According to Flor Tesoro, president of the Philippine Bamboo Society of Advocates, bamboo farming has enormous potential, but only if farmers can access the knowledge and tools they need to transform raw materials into high-end finished goods.

“Bamboo may be made into various valuable items, but farmers sometimes lack the skills and resources necessary to enter the manufacturing industry. He said in Filipino, “That’s where you can make money.

Former DOST undersecretary Tesoro asked concerned government organizations to expand the scope of the training they provide beyond the bamboo-planting component and aid farmers in moving higher up the value chain.

For bamboo farmers who wish to launch small manufacturing enterprises, he suggested that government financial institutions provide seed money, particularly once the farmers have completed manufacturing and marketing courses.

The proponent of bamboo was responding to a recently finished three-day session on bamboo production organized by the Agriculture Training Institute (ATI) in Naujan town.

According to the ATI, the 21 training participants from this town were made up of agriculture extension specialists and farming enthusiasts.

The Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau’s Urban and Biodiversity Research Development and Extension Center (UBRDEC) conducted the training.

The local government unit in Gloria, a neighboring municipality suffering from the effects of the oil disaster, also finished a bamboo cultivation demonstration earlier this month.

Tesoro also mentioned that bamboo has a history of successfully absorbing heavy metals from the soil.

He claimed, “This is certainly worth further study,” but he refrained from declaring that bamboo can also assist in filtering out the toxins caused by petroleum in the environment.

“Bamboo is a good vehicle for inclusive growth,” Tesoro remarked.
