DA: Effective agrichemical control is essential for food security

To ensure food security and environmental protection in the face of global concerns, the Department of Agriculture (DA) underlined the need for an effective and efficient regulatory system for agricultural chemicals.

Senior Undersecretary Domingo Panganiban spoke on Tuesday at the Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (FPA) of the Department of Agriculture (DA)’s 46th founding anniversary celebration. He emphasized the importance of the regulatory organization in achieving President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

“The Marcos administration took office last year believing every Filipino had a natural right to sufficient nutrition. The President is dedicated to securing that right for every Filipino, he declared in a message published on the DA social media page.

According to Panganiban, last year, the department’s combined efforts resulted in a record-breaking 19.76 million metric tons of palay production, outpacing the yield between 2000 and 2020 year-over-year.

“The DA distributed 7.7 million kilograms of fertilizer last year, along with 2,500 gallons of pesticides and a billion pesos in fertilizer discount vouchers,” said Panganiban, noting that the intervention provided necessary farm inputs for the enterprises of 1.8 million farmers and 14,000 farmers’ cooperatives.

Additionally, he thanked the agency’s staff for their 46-year efforts to raise farm incomes, productivity, and food production while employing safe and effective pesticide and fertilizer inputs.

The DA-FPA has coordinated 379 training sessions on balanced fertilization nationwide with the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM).

Panganiban urged the FPA to keep improving their offerings and implement necessary adjustments for the sake of Filipino farmers.

You must adhere to your mandate to help the agricultural sector obtain sufficient supplies of fertilizers, pesticides, and other inputs; enforce the highest quality control standards for both fertilizer and pesticides, as well as other agricultural chemicals; provide farmers with the technical know-how and funding they need to produce their organic fertilizer through the implementation of the Fortified Organic Fertilizer Development Program; and educate both the internal and external stakeholders.

The culminating activity was led by Panganiban, Assistant Secretary Rex Estoperez, and DA-FPA officials, with participants from the regional offices and significant figures from the pesticide and fertilizer industries.
