Teodoro Herbosa was recently appointed as the secretary of the Department of Health, and a representative of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines-Episcopal Commission on Health Care (CBCP-ECHC) expressed hope that he will address significant health challenges and concerns in the nation.

Herbosa’s appointment, according to Vice Chairman of the Commission Bishop Oscar Jaime Florencio, is a positive step towards better managing the nation’s healthcare system.

In an interview with Church-run Radio Veritas on Wednesday, he said, “With the appointment of Sec. Ted Herbosa for the Department of Health, we thank the Lord for this choice because, at least, we shall be guided once again in resolving the concerns of the Department of Health.”

He continued, “Taking care of the worries would entail dealing with the challenges that encroach on our life with much ease.

Herbosa was selected to lead the DOH by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday.

From 2010 to 2015, he served as the DOH’s undersecretary. He was in charge of initiatives including the Hospital Accreditation Commission, the modernization of the Philippine Orthopaedics Centre, and the encouragement of Public-Private Partnerships in the healthcare industry.

The newly appointed secretary previously served as the NTF’s adviser on Coronavirus Disease 2029 (Covid-19).

After Francisco Duque III’s tenure as health secretary expired on June 30, 2022, the job of DOH secretary has remained unfilled for about a year.

Since that time, Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire has been the officer in charge of the DOH.
