If the Taal and Mayon volcanoes erupt, DSWD is prepared to support LGUs.
According to Secretary Rex Gatchalian on Wednesday, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is prepared to support local government units (LGUs) should the Taal and Mayon volcanoes erupt again.
Gatchalian claimed at a press conference that he had previously told Albay Governor Edcel Grex Lagman that the DSWD is prepared to respond and that Batangas province is likewise getting ready.
“We continue to stockpile to ensure that we are ready to support the local government’s efforts if something happens,” Gatchalian said.
He said that prepositioning of at least 100,000 family food packets (FFPs) in Calabarzon and Bicol is also continuing as part of the mitigating efforts.
The DSWD Field Office in the Bicol Region has already activated its rapid response team (QRT) to track changes in the Mayon volcano’s state.
Norman Laurio, the regional director for FO 5, has visited the storage facilities in Bogtong and Camalig municipalities and arranged to use the OCD’s storage facility if necessary.
To ensure the facilities are in good shape, the FO V staff also went to the designated evacuation centers in Guinobatan, Camalig, and Daraga municipalities.
Since Sunday, the Taal Volcano in Batangas province and the Mayon Volcano in Albay have shown signs of “increasing unrest,” according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Gatchalian also spoke about the government’s Food Stamp Programme (FSP) at the same Kapihan media forum. According to him, the FSP aims to reduce the waste of agricultural products due to an overabundance.
According to him, the DSWD works closely with the Department of Agriculture to recruit local farmers as active participants in the FSP implementation.
We are aware of the reports that farmers frequently have an excess of squash or tomatoes but no purchasers. The goal of this program is to create a solution to which we may contribute as well. We’ll reduce the amount of agriculture waste, he promised.
According to him, the program was initially intended to give preference to “farmers-driven stores” run by organizations like the Kadiwa ng Pangulo and Agri-Coop as places where recipients could purchase less expensive commodities and products.
“We must connect the farmers and their products to the Lamesa of Filipino Mahihirap. Farm-to-market is not always the same as farm-to-table. (We must link the tables of the underprivileged Filipinos and the farmers. Farm-to-table as well as farm-to-market is important, he added.
According to Gatchalian, the FSP is also “meant to help our farmers” because it supports low-income households with monthly incomes of little around PHP8,000.
The “Walang Gutom 2027 Food Stamp Programme” aims to give at least 1 million “food poor” families a PHP 3,000 monthly payment.
