DOE: Business spends P6.8 billion on energy efficiency

According to the Energy Utilisation Management Bureau of the Department of Energy (DOE), designated establishments (DEs) spent PHP6.8 billion between 2021 and 2022 on energy efficiency and conservation (EEC) activities.

The bureau receives yearly EEC and energy consumption reports from DEs, which the DOE has designated as energy-intensive sectors, to track their adoption of EEC initiatives and how these programs have improved their use of energy resources.

These private companies operate in a variety of industries, including those related to business, industry, transportation, power, agriculture, and public works.

DEs are broken down into three categories: Type 1 DEs, which had energy consumption between 500,001 and 4 million kWh in the previous year; Type 2 DEs, whose energy consumption exceeded 4 million kWh; and other DEs, which had energy consumption between 100,000 and 500,000 kWh in the previous year.

The DOE claimed that Type 2 DEs of PHP6.1 billion made up the majority of the EEC investments between 2021 and 2022.

While 4,782 additional DEs invested PHP306 million between 2021 and 2022, Type 1 DEs invested a total of PHP360 million.

“I am thrilled that our DEs are making progress with EEC. The DOE Secretary Raphael Lotilla said in a statement that these successes “bring multiple benefits for the companies, including enhancing the sustainability of the energy system, supporting strategic objectives for economic and social development, promoting environmental goals, and increasing prosperity.”

The new installation, upgrading, or retrofitting of particular equipment or devices, such as lighting retrofit, automated lighting control systems, smart control systems, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) upgrades, boiler replacement, and other similar devices or equipment, is among the energy-efficient technologies and practices DEs invest in.

A rise in investments was also noted by the bureau in solar photovoltaic systems, variable frequency drives (VFDs), cogeneration systems, district cooling systems, pumping systems, HVAC systems, compressed air systems, smart manufacturing systems, and building energy management systems.

To obtain or maintain ISO 50001 or comparable frameworks, a company must include an energy management system policy in its daily operations. Institutions that have an efficient energy management system are given this international standard.

The goal of ISO 50001 is to compel private organizations to report and lower their emissions and to show a commitment to creating regulations that will make their activities more energy-efficient.

In order to achieve a low carbon-intensive economy, and more significantly, to incorporate this into their business models, the industry has a critical role to play, said Lotilla.
