NCRPO suspends gun permit due to SONA

The second State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on July 24 will result in a 24-hour suspension of all licenses to carry weapons outside of dwelling (PTCFOR), the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) stated on Friday.

After a meeting at the national headquarters in Camp Crame, Quezon City, NCRPO leader Maj Gen. Edgar Alan Okubo said that PTCFOR in the NCR will be suspended from midnight on July 24 to 12:01 a.m.

He declared that the “No Fly Zone/No Drone Zone” around Quezon City’s Batasang Pambansa and its surrounding areas would likewise be implemented.

Of the 22,905 people scheduled for deployment at SONA, Okubo stated that 17,121 will come from the NCRPO’s five districts, 4,476 from government organizations, and 500 from force multipliers.

The NCRPO will run simulations and communication drills to establish backup plans for potential incidents.

“Inaasahan na natin ang mga kilos protesta pagkakaroon sa araw [ng SONA], kung kaya’t nakahanda na tayo para sa pagpapanatili ng kaayusan at seguridad. Lalong-lalo na ang pagpapahalaga sa karapatang-pantao ng lahat ng makikilahok sa araw na ito (We are anticipating protests on SONA day so we are prepared to maintain order and security. Mahigpit din nating ipatutupad ang maximum tolerance at pagsunod sa Police Operational Procedures. In addition, we will strictly enforce maximum tolerance and adherence to Police Operational Procedures (while also respecting the human rights of all participants),” Okubo stated.

Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr., the head of the Philippine National Police (PNP), stated that his agency has observed no threat to President Marcos Jr.’s second SONA.

Acorda stated in a radio interview, “As we have been saying, expect for the worst and hope for the best.”

According to the intelligence reports that will be received, if any alterations need to be made, “We have (security) template that we follow during SONA, and we are prepared for this,” he added.

Acorda stated that the police will be most patient while dealing with rally attendees.

“We’ll make sure they exercise their legal rights. We will allow them to discuss any topics they choose. But we’ll ensure this doesn’t interfere with anyone else’s rights,” he added.
