Farmers in West Visayas are urged to purchase P480 million in crop insurance.
Farmers are urged by the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC) to take advantage of the government’s free insurance program for six agricultural product lines.
In an interview on Monday, PCIC 6 Regional Manager Eva Ulie Laud stated that Western Visayas had been allotted PHP480.69 million, with 209,056 farmers and fisherfolks as the target population. These six product lines are rice, corn, high-value crops, non-crop agricultural assets, livestock, and fisheries.
The largest allocation goes to Iloilo at PHP189.87 million, followed by PHP84.12 million to Negros Occidental and PHP84.12 million to Capiz.
There are PHP45.67 million in the province of Aklan, PHP55.28 million in Antique, and PHP21.63 million in Guimaras.
Laud stated that they are specifically encouraging farmers of rice and corn to sign up for the insurance, which is quite opportune given that the planting season for the first crop has already begun.
“They can apply for crop insurance for rice and corn 15 days after or before planting. They must be included in our master list or the RSBSA (Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture),” the speaker stressed.
She urged them to go to their local municipal agriculture office and complete the necessary paperwork.
As of June 15, 2023, they had already insured 77,087 farmers for all product lines, with fund utilization reaching PHP135.418 million, she claimed.
Furthermore, a fund utilization of PHP61.629 million supported 36,053 rice farmers.
“A 1.5-hectare plot is provided to each household. She continued that we limited it to 0.5 hectares so that more farmers might benefit from the free insurance for corn and rice.
Farmers must pay an additional premium of 10% of the covered amount of farm input not to exceed PHP20,000 per hectare for land larger than 1.5 hectares.
Laud continued saying that farmers who plant after the first planting season will still be accepted.
This year’s wet season, known as the first cropping season, runs from March to September.
