San Jose de Buenavista, the provincial capital, has already been hit by the extremely contagious African swine flu (ASF).

Elmer Untaran, the mayor of San Jose de Buenavista, reported that he had received laboratory test results from the Department of Agriculture’s Regional Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (DA-RADDL) in Iloilo City on Monday confirming that two of the seven blood samples taken on June 23 from Barangay Bugarot were ASF positive.

Upon learning of the positive cases in Hamtic, “I requested for the testing of the swine in Barangay Bugarot,” Untaran said in an interview.

On the border between San Jose de Buenavista and the municipality of Hamtic, where the index cases originated, lies Barangay Bugarot.

The San Jose de Buenavista Municipal Agriculture Office (MAO) and the Antique Provincial Veterinary Office collected samples from four hog farms; all positive samples were from just one farm.

On Tuesday, Untaran will issue an Executive Order outlining steps to stop the spread of ASF, including the “test and destroy” strategy in which ASF-positive hogs will be eliminated from the population.

Two teams of the Provincial Veterinarian and MAO will be formed to carry out the tests.

For the hog-raisers to receive their claims, the majority of the hogs in our community were likewise insured by the Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation, the man stated.

Since the hogs are insured, he claimed there is no immediate plan to declare a state of emergency or give financial relief.

According to the San Jose de Buenavista MAO’s records as of June 26, 256 farmers owned 451 breeders and 1,475 insured fatteners.

Untaran stated that they are awaiting the certification from the DA-RADDL of samples taken from Barangays Maybato Sur, Maybato North, and Bariri.

Hog fatalities have been recorded by all three.

In the meantime, the municipality of Hamtic reported 2,051 swine fatalities in 28 barangays as of June 24, with a total loss of PHP19.19 million.
