Antique Province Offers Assistance to LGUs with Suspected ASF Cases
The Provincial Veterinary (ProVet) Office of Antique is prepared to extend support to local government units (LGUs) dealing with suspected cases of African swine fever (ASF).
According to Dr. Marco Rafael Ardamil, Chief of the Public Health Division at ProVet, LGUs can seek assistance in the collection of blood samples, which will be forwarded to the Department of Agriculture-Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (DA-RADDL) in Iloilo City for confirmation.
The office is also available to conduct checkups, as well as provide medications and vitamins for affected swine.
βWhile some hog raisers in Sibalom have already directly reported swine deaths to us, we still need to wait for the LGUs to formally request our assistance,β Ardamil stated during an interview on Wednesday.
He further mentioned that they have come across complaints on social media or received reports from concerned citizens relayed through ProVet.
βUnless there is laboratory confirmation of ASF, the swine deaths in other LGUs will remain as suspected cases,β Ardamil explained.
Albert Estoya, the Municipal Agriculture Officer of Sibalom, stated in a separate interview that they have not yet recorded any ASF cases in the municipality. Estoya also mentioned that Sibalom Mayor Gian Carlo OcceΓ±a is expected to issue another Executive Order (EO) on Thursday, as the initial order released on June 21, 2023, will expire today.
EO 2023-029-VI called for the implementation of enhanced quarantine measures, including a ban on the movement of boars and other artificial insemination for breeding services, as well as the entry of pork products, hogs, and livestock into the municipality.
Meanwhile, the neighboring town of San Remigio has implemented 24/7 border control measures starting July 4 to safeguard the livelihood of small-scale or backyard hog raisers.
βI appeal to my fellow townspeople to cooperate during the inspections at our border control to prevent ASF from affecting our town,β emphasized San Remigio Mayor Margarito Mission Jr. in a separate interview.
Currently, the municipalities of Hamtic and San Jose de Buenavista have confirmed cases of ASF.
