The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines – Episcopal Commission on Youth (CBCP-ECY) has called on the Philippine delegation participating in the upcoming World Youth Day in Portugal to seize the opportunity to rejuvenate hope in a wounded world.

Bishop Rex Andrew Alarcon, the head of the commission, expressed in an article on the CBCP website that WYD aims to convey a message of hope to the numerous young individuals who are losing hope in today’s challenging world.

During the WYD in Lisbon from August 1 to 6, Filipino pilgrims will have the chance to share their faith and culture with other young Catholic believers, enabling them to encounter the Lord through their interactions, exchange their beliefs and cultural heritage, and be enriched by the unique talents and gifts of others.

Hundreds of young Filipinos, including bishops, are expected to attend this gathering of faith.

This year’s celebration theme is “Mary arose and went with haste” (Luke 1:39).

Organizers reported that, as of June 30, over 600,000 individuals have already registered for the event, eagerly anticipating the opportunity to meet and pray with Pope Francis.

In a heartwarming gesture, thousands of families have volunteered to open their homes and provide accommodations for the visiting pilgrims.

For those unable to physically attend the event in Lisbon, Bishop Alarcon encouraged them to unite spiritually with the pilgrims and follow the proceedings online.

The first World Youth Day was initiated by St. Pope John Paul II in 1985 and has since attracted hundreds of thousands of young people worldwide.

Traditionally held every three years, the most recent WYD occurred in Panama in 2019. Due to the pandemic, the Vatican postponed the Lisbon event originally scheduled for 2022 to 2023.
