🌱 Land Use Study Proposed to Boost Agricultural and Investment Potential 📊

Ilocos Norte province plans to initiate a comprehensive assessment of land use throughout the province to identify potential areas for agricultural and industrial development that align with environmental sustainability and investment goals.

In an interview on Monday, Lawyer Pancho Jose, Chief of Staff to Governor Matthew Joseph Manotoc and an agriculture project consultant, revealed that the study would be a collaborative effort between the Ilocos Norte government, the Bureau of Soils and Water Management (BSWM), and the Department of Agriculture (DA) based in the Ilocos Region.

Jose explained, “The study will be the initial step in determining more targeted interventions and assistance for farmers in Ilocos, enabling them to enhance their productivity and improve their livelihoods.”

With a budget of PHP2.4 million, the project aims to evaluate land uses and identify limitations in cropping systems, thereby identifying potential areas for agricultural investments and implementing site-specific interventions to address production challenges.

The study will focus on formulating land use allocation and management strategies that promote sustainable productivity, aligning with long-term development plans and ecological enhancement.

To expedite the study’s implementation, the Ilocos Norte Board unanimously approved Provincial Resolution No. 2023-07-164 on Monday, granting the governor the authority to enter into a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the BSWM, represented by Director Gina P. Nilo, and the DA Regional Field Office 1, represented by Director Anne Q. Bares, for the land use assessment.

According to Jose, the provincial government has long planned to conduct this study, but it is only now being implemented due to various circumstances. The assessment will commence as soon as possible and is expected to conclude by the end of this year.

Five years ago, soil testing was carried out in certain parts of the province to assist farmers in determining the most suitable crops for their agricultural lands. However, this time, the color-coded soil fertility map of the province will be updated, providing individual farmers with information about the fertility levels of their soil and appropriate actions to improve it.

The color-coded map will include corresponding fertilizer recommendations for different crops, enabling farmers to make informed decisions for their agricultural practices.
