🛢️💹 The Philippine Nickel Industry Association (PNIA) predicts that the demand for nickel will continue to rise, driven by the transition to smart cities and clean energy. Nickel ore plays a vital role in electric vehicle (EV) batteries and is also processed to produce stainless steel used in megacity development and renewable energy technologies.

PNIA President Dante Bravo emphasized that clean energy and smart city projects heavily rely on nickel, used in various clean energy technologies like EVs, solar panels, power grid systems, wind turbines, and hydrogen-based energy solutions.

China will be a significant driver of nickel demand, especially with the country’s ongoing infrastructure investment plan. The global EV industry alone has attracted investments amounting to USD 300 billion, which might reach USD 1 trillion in the next five years.

To fully capitalize on the growing global demand, the Philippines needs to attract additional investments to explore, process, and further develop its nickel reserves. The country, alongside Indonesia, has significant nickel reserves that can meet this demand. Presently, the Philippines has 34 nickel mines, and production reached 29.2 million dry metric tons in 2022, with Q1 2023 production at 3.9 million dry metric tons.

Bravo stressed the need for more government support, openness to exploration, and ease of access for foreign investors to be competitive in the global market. Additionally, the country should map its nickel reserves and encourage value-added processing to produce battery materials.

PNIA’s Nickel Initiative program aims to facilitate policy discussions with the government and other stakeholders to promote responsible mining, attract more investments, and boost the competitiveness of the Philippine nickel mining sector. The program will culminate in the August Nickel Initiative 2023 Business Conference, bringing together government officials, private sector representatives, and other non-government nickel industry stakeholders.
