During the two-week extended community quarantine (ECQ) in Manila, economic activity is hindered. Although the government’s immunization campaign against the coronavirus illness 2019 (Covid-19) received a boost, the event in Manila concludes on Friday.

In a Viber message to media, Department of Finance (DOF) Secretary Carlos Dominguez III said, “The major accomplishment over the ECQ period from August 6 to 19 is that 4.1 million individuals got their first dosage against 1.6 million from July 23 to August 5.”

This is in accordance with the authorities’ request that the public uses the ECQ time to be vaccinated against Covid-19 and contribute to the aim of protecting more Filipinos against the virus.

The ECQ is being introduced this month to combat the increase in Covid-19 infections, particularly following the discovery of local transmissions caused by the highly infectious Delta form. It is the second for the year after a similar mobility restriction level was applied from March 29 to April 11.

The inter-agency Development Budget Coordination Committee (DBCC) stated earlier this week that the government would speed up the roll-out of its vaccination program in order to boost the number of people who have been vaccinated, which will assist in the economy’s ongoing recovery.

To guarantee economic recovery while addressing health issues, the government is adopting this approach, as well as granular quarantines and allowing more people to work.

“By carefully balancing Covid-19 and non-Covid-19 risks in the first half of 2021, we were able to increase GDP (gross domestic product) growth to 11.8 percent in Q2 (second quarter) 2021,” the DBCC stated.

Due to the effect of the two-week ECQ this year, economic managers announced another reduction in this year’s growth goal to 4 percent to 5% from 6 percent to 7%.
