The mandated usage of face shields when going out has been repealed by the Manila municipal government, except in medical and hospital facilities.

Face shields are only required in hospital settings, medical clinics, and other medical institutions, according to Executive Order No. 42, which was issued on Monday.

“However, in malls, on the streets, or anywhere in their barangays, towns, and businesses, it is no longer obligatory para naman sa ganoon, maibsan naman yung gastusin ng mga tao,” Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso said in an ambush interview following the flag-raising ceremony outside City Hall.

The order comes after the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF EID) decided on November 4 to reduce Metro Manila’s Alert Level Status from No. 3 to No. 2.

The order stated, “Alert Level 2 applies to places where case transmission is low and decreasing, healthcare utilization is low, or case counts are low but increasing, or case counts are low and dropping but total bed utilization rate and critical care unit usage rate are increasing.”

The directive also highlighted multiple press stories in which Secretary of the Interior and Local Government Eduardo Ao stated that several members of the IATF-EID are in support of eliminating the requirement to wear a face shield.

However, because the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic is still active, Domagoso underlined that wearing a face mask is still required.

“Hindi na po ang face shield ang Maynila, only sa mga ating medical facility na lamang.” Except magma-mask pa din kayo ha, mawalan na kayo ng alalahanin, gastusin, makakahinga na kayo ng normal. A mask is a must-have. The wearing of a face shield is no longer required in Manila, except in medical establishments. This will reduce the financial load and allow you to breathe easier, but even if you are already vaccinated, you must still wear a mask),” Domagoso explained.
