Duterte is worried that a new ‘IHU’ Covid-19 version may enter the Philippines.
President Rodrigo Duterte expressed alarm about the new B.1.640.2 lineage, also known as the IHU Covid-19 variety, on Thursday, stating that it will enter the country “whether we like it or not.”
“In the meantime, another variety of the so-called IHU variant, which was initially discovered in France last November, has been reported.” Ito ito ito ito ito ito ito ito ito ito it (It will enter the country). Dadating ‘to (it will come) whether we like it or not,” Duterte stated during his People’s Address.
The IHU variety, which was first discovered in France, includes 46 alterations, according to experts.
“We’ll just have to deal with the rising cases of infection,” he said. “It was originally a Covid-19, then it connected with the Delta, and then itong ngayong bago Omicron tapos may reported case of a new variant emerging in the countries of Europe, yung IHU (this new Omicron variant, and now there are reported cases of a variant emerging in the countries of Europe called IHU).”
Duterte was particularly concerned about the country’s rapidly expanding number of active cases in a short period of time.
He noted that active cases increased from roughly 5,400 on January 4 to over 17,200 on January 6.
“In just two days, it more than tripled.” “That’s how the problem spread throughout our town, our country, and the world,” he explained.
The IHU variety is “not yet an official variant of concern nor interest,” according to Dr. Edsel Salvana, a member of the Department of Health’s Technical Advisory Group.
He went on to say that the World Health Organization (WHO) has been tracking the variant since November of last year.
While the IHU version contains a lot of mutations, it doesn’t have the same survival advantage or immune evasion as the Delta and Omicron variants, according to Salvana.
“It’s a variety that’s being monitored,” Salvana explained, “but it’s not as alarming as Omicron or Delta, or even the other ones like Alpha, Beta, and Gamma.”
According to him, the IHU version “does not pose a threat at this time.”
It was also “too early to speculate on virological, epidemiological, or clinical aspects of this IHU variation,” according to the WHO.
He went on to say that mutations don’t automatically imply higher infectivity or vaccine departure.
While the Philippines’ health authorities will continue to watch the IHU variety, they will concentrate their efforts on the Delta and Omicron for the time being, according to Salvana, “since this is truly doing havoc all over the world.”
He claims that Covid-19 vaccines “substantially” protect against serious disease and that booster doses are available for extra protection.
Infectiousness and mutation risk are also reduced by the immunizations, he added.
