Of the wake of the unexpected increase in Covid-19 cases, President Rodrigo Duterte renewed his appeal for the Philippine National Police (PNP) to arrest and punish black market suppliers of “necessary pharmaceuticals.”

In a prerecorded Talk to the People, he declared, “I am putting on notice the whole PNP at itong mga (and these) station commanders, any transactions of black marketing of these important medicines should be apprehended, walang (no) exception.”

According to him, the PNP has the authority to keep them for 34 hours for inquiry and summary inquest processes.

“Dalhin sa estasyon, pasok muna diyan sa selda,” he said.

He stated that “without exception,” everyone involved, including the salespeople and the store owner, should be arrested.

“Hulihin ninyo ang may-ari, kung ang salesgirl lang (Arrest the store owner and salesgirl), then the owner, no exception.” They should be arrested and held for 34 hours. He stated, “I believe that is a significant infraction.”

Dr. Oscar Gutierrez, Officer-in-Charge of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), recommended the public to buy pharmaceuticals exclusively from FDA-approved pharmacies.

The manufacturing, importation, exportation, sale, offering for sale, distribution, transfer, non-consumer use, marketing, advertising, or sponsorship of health products without sufficient license is forbidden under Republic Act (RA) No. 9711, or the FDA Act of 2009.
