Workplace Techniques For Managing Dyslexia

Dyslexia might have a negative impact on your job performance. Here are some common approaches used by people with this disease to deal with challenges that their condition may cause at work.

Make a note of it

When you’re having trouble staying organized, writing things down can help. If you have any professional or personal chores to manage, you should attempt to write them down. You can be sure you won’t forget them if you write them down on a piece of paper.

You might start by getting a notepad and assigning assignments to various days of the week. Use one page for the entire day. Also, attempt to set aside a specified amount of time to finish your chores.

Place the remaining chores on a different page once you’ve completed that. These are your long-term goals. Cross off tasks as you do them during the day, or try to reorder what you’ve written.

If you don’t get to do or finish certain things today, put them off for the next day. You can also include birthdays and reminders on the pages. It’s essentially the same as constructing a disposable organizer.

If you are a highly visual person who learns best by writing things down, this method can be really beneficial to you. It can also give you a sense of security because you’ve organized your duties and written them down so you don’t forget them.

Silence Please

Some dyslexics merely require a quiet setting to function and work effectively. Finding a peaceful area at home or at work could be exactly what you need to regain control and attention on your work.

Some people simply go to their “silent spot,” close their eyes, and type away on their computer. This is one method for allowing your creative side to emerge and take control. If you think about it that way, you won’t have to worry about attempting to remember the correct spelling of words.

Directions

If you’re having trouble with directions, the landmark method can help. Instead of using street names, you detect and examine landmarks to find your way around. For example, remember that your favorite restaurant is next to KFC and McDonalds will help you locate it.

Highlighters

Using highlighters can be really advantageous, whether you’re working or studying. If you’re reading a book, try highlighting it to keep track of where you’ve left off. You can also use highlighters to draw attention to memos or written instructions that you get at work. In this manner, you can read them without the distracting white glare that many dyslexics experience when reading.

Marking Important Points

When reading a printed document or message, attempt to highlight the important elements so that you can review them more quickly. However, make sure that you only write on documents that you are permitted to write on, or else you may face serious consequences.

These are just a few examples of how you might mitigate the effects of dyslexia at work. An approach that works for one individual may not work for another. As a result, you’ll need to experiment and test which strategies work best for you.
