The CBCP is in favor of health breaks in schools.
As the country battles a surge in coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines – Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education (CBCP-ECCCE) has expressed support for the declared “health breaks” in schools in areas under Alert Level 3.
“I agree with the extremely wise decision to prioritize health and life,” said Bishop Elmer Mangalinao, chairman of the panel, in an interview broadcast on Saturday by the church-run Radio Veritas.
“I agree with what authorities in many Catholic schools have said about declaring a health break, which was based on a comprehensive assessment because the number of Covid-19 cases has increased.”
These actions, according to Mangalinao, are being taken to safeguard everyone’s safety and to prevent the disease from spreading in schools.
He stressed the significance of every student, teacher, school staff member, and their families cooperating to protect themselves from the Covid-19 infection by vaccination and adherence to minimal health standards such as wearing a face mask, hand washing, and social distancing.
“Vaccination is quite crucial right now,” Mangalinao remarked.
Due to an increase in infections in the region, the Department of Education (DepEd) – National Capital Region on January 14 stopped classes in public schools from January 15 to 22.
The department stated in Regional Memorandum 017 s. 2022 that the suspension of classes was done to relieve the health burden imposed by the increase in Covid-29 cases on school workers and students’ physical and mental well-being.
If the Covid-19 danger in their area is high, private schools may halt courses at their discretion after consulting with parents’ associations.
Since last week, several colleges and Catholic institutions have canceled courses due to the fear of widespread virus transmission.
The Department of Health reported 39,004 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday, with 23,613 recoveries and 43 deaths.
