An official announced on Tuesday that Indonesia’s parliament had passed a bill to move the country’s capital from Jakarta to East Kalimantan province on Borneo island.

After the bill was passed, Planning Minister Suharso Monoarfa declared in parliament, “The new capital city has a central function and is a symbol of national identity, as well as a new economic center.”

The new capital will be called Nusantara, a Javanese word for the Indonesian archipelago chosen by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, according to Monoarfa.

According to the new law, the new capital’s projected area is 256,142.74 hectares (632,941 acres).

The bill establishes the legal framework for the 489 trillion rupiah (USD34 billion) project to move forward before the 2024 presidential election.

With a population of more than 10 million inhabitants, Jakarta is one of the world’s most densely populated cities.

Floods are common in the metropolis, and it is sinking due to subsidence caused by millions of people drinking groundwater.

After the country gained independence on August 17, 1945, Jakarta became the de facto capital of the Republic of Indonesia.
