Omicron is still sweeping the globe, with 18 million cases reported last week: WHO

People in countries with low coronavirus vaccination rates are at risk of serious disease and death, according to the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), as Covid-19’s Omicron form continues to spread over the world, with 18 million cases reported last week.

“For the time being, the number of mortality is stable, but we are concerned about the impact Omicron is having on already overworked health personnel and overcrowded health systems,” Tedros Ghebreyesus said during a coronavirus webinar. “Make no mistake: Omicron is causing hospitalizations and fatalities, and even the milder instances are clogging up hospitals.”

It gives hope that the worst of the last wave has passed in nations where cases appear to have peaked, but “no country is out of the woods yet,” he said.

“I’m still concerned about many nations with poor vaccination rates, because unvaccinated people are at a far higher risk of serious illness and death,” Tedros added.

He echoed other WHO officials who spoke during the webinar, stating that unvaccinated people account for the vast majority of coronavirus hospitalizations and deaths.

This isn’t a minor illness.

“Omicron may be less severe on average, but the story that it is a minor disease is deceptive, harms the overall response, and costs more lives,” Tedros explained. “The infection is spreading far too quickly, and many people are still at risk.”

The next few weeks, according to the WHO chief, are vital for health professionals and health systems in many countries.

To relieve the strain on the system, he urged everyone to do their utmost to reduce the danger of illness.

Tedros stated, “Now is not the time to give up and wave the white flag.”

He believes that by efficiently sharing health tools and applying tried and true public health and social policies, the world can greatly lessen the effects of the present wave.

He noted the WHO’s COVAX facility, which aims to minimize vaccination disparity, as well as partners like Gavi, a vaccine distribution partnership.

“Over the weekend, COVAX gave its one-billionth dose,” Tedros added. “Of course, that isn’t enough; we need to do more.”

He stated that getting immunizations to the unvaccinated at the time of omicron is more crucial than ever.

“This pandemic is far from ended, and with Omicron’s enormous worldwide expansion, new varieties are bound to appear, which is why tracking and assessment are so important,” he said.

“I’m worried that unless we modify the existing approach, we’ll enter a second, even more devastating period of vaccination inequities,” he continued.
