Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., the chief implementer of the National Task Force (NTF) against Covid-19, announced on Thursday that the government has allotted adequate cash for vaccinations and auxiliary supplies needed for this year’s national Covid-19 immunization program.

“Ang programa natin ngayon taong, ang gobyerno parin ang gagastos (This year’s vaccination program will be funded by the government),” Galvez, who is also the vaccine czar, said on the sidelines of the “Resbakuna sa Botika” program’s ceremonial launch in Pasig City.

Covid-19 vaccinations with only emergency use authorization (EUA) are still unavailable on the commercial market, according to Galvez.

“We’re talking to the manufacturers; they don’t have a plan for this year,” he said, “but they can definitely—maybe after six months, they can change their commercialization approach.”

Only the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is available for sale in the United States, according to Galvez.

He added, “I expect other companies will [soon] seek for a commercialization rate.”

Galvez stated that the government will continue to purchase Covid-19 vaccinations and associated supplies through a streamlined procurement process this year.

“We provided PHP45 billion for our multilateral loans, as well as PHP2.76 billion for the Department of Health’s GAA (general appropriations act) fund, so no worries,” he added.

At least 100 million doses of vaccine have been stockpiled in various storage locations throughout the Philippines, with more vaccines likely to arrive this quarter.

The 100 million vaccines are “enough to cover 28 to 30 million unvaccinated persons and 25 million individuals who require booster doses,” according to Galvez.

By June, the government expects 90 million Filipinos to be fully immunized, with more than 71.16 million adult Filipinos receiving booster vaccine doses against Covid-19 by the end of the third quarter.
