PH and Russia reiterate their commitment to exploring the use of compact reactors.

During the Small Modular Reactors’ Day on Thursday, the Philippine Department of Energy (DOE) and the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOM) reaffirmed their joint efforts to study the potential use of small modular reactor (SMR) technology in the Philippines.

This event was presented in conjunction with ROSATOM’s Breakthrough Technologies for a Sustainable Future Week, which took place on the margins of World EXPO 2020.

SMRs are “modern nuclear reactors with a power capacity of up to 300 MW(e) per unit, which is about one-third of the producing capacity of typical nuclear power reactors,” according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Because of their size and the ability to pre-assemble most SMRs in factories, they are excellent for industrial applications as well as distant places with limited grid connectivity.

Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi said in a pre-recorded video message that SMRs are a “game-changer in the global energy scene,” especially because they may be used in places where massive nuclear power plants aren’t feasible (NPPs).

“Given that SMRs provide non-intermittent power supply for calamity-prone countries, their low-carbon-footprint, predictable supply costs, and are tailored-fit for our country’s archipelagic setting,” Secretary Cusi highlighted, “it is an attractive, feasible, and practicable choice for the Philippines.”

After an official visit to Saint Petersburg, Russia, in 2017, where he witnessed the assembly and processing of the 70-megawatt Akademik Lomonosov floating co-generation plant in the Kamchatka region, he expressed strong interest in Russian nuclear energy technology and its potential application in the Philippines.

In Moscow, Russia, the DOE, and ROSATOM signed a memorandum of intent in 2019 to perform a pre-feasibility study on the applicability of SMR technology in the Philippines.

Cusi also took the opportunity to thank ROSATOM for their ongoing cooperation and guidance as the Philippines continues to investigate the safe use of nuclear energy under IAEA supervision.

“SMR technologies offer an effective solution in the supply of stable, reliable, and environmentally friendly power in island countries,” said ROSATOM Overseas President Evgeny Pakermanov.

He went on to say that Rosatom’s SMRs are among the safest, most well-proven, and cutting-edge technologies in the world, adding that “Russian SMR technology is growing increasingly popular day by day, as international guests at ROSATOM’s SMR NPP day attest.”
