General Andres Centino, the Chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), has ordered all military commanders to ensure that the local communist insurgent danger is removed before President Rodrigo R. Duterte’s term ends in June.

Centino gave the order during a command meeting at the AFP headquarters in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City, on Tuesday, which was attended by all major service and unified command leaders.

“As your Chief of Staff, I’m leading the charge in our campaign’s last push. I implore everyone to keep the momentum going, to retain our successes, and to remain victorious. Let’s get this local armed war over with before the end of the President’s term. “As the Filipino people’s Armed Forces, we will not disappoint them in their quest for a peaceful and safe country,” he said in a statement released Tuesday night.

Centino also ordered all AFP commanders to step up their activities and focus on destroying the remaining local threat groups through intelligence-driven military operations.

He specifically ordered the redeployment of AFP forces to the communist group’s base of operations, as well as the launch of decisive engagements aimed at destroying the enemies’ will to fight, cutting off their source of funds and logistics support, and savagely attacking the enemy leadership, which is considered their center of gravity.

He claimed that the AFP had neutralized 43 prominent New People’s Army (NPA) leaders and Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) Central Committee members in 2021, citing the military’s achievements.

These are CPP Politburo Committee members Jorge Madlos, Menandro Villanueva, Pedro Codaste, Eddie Genelsa, and Maria Loida Tuso Magpatoc.

Similarly, ten CPP-NPA guerilla fronts have been disbanded, and more than 3,000 party and underground organization members and sympathizers have dropped out of the CPP and the National Democratic Front.

The AFP reported the surrender of 144 members of the Abu Sayyaf Group, 41 members of Dawlah Islamiya, and 249 members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters as part of its targeted military operations against local terrorist groups.

Centino also directed all AFP commanders to work closely with the Commission on Elections, the Philippine National Police, and the Department of the Interior and Local Government to maintain peace, order, and security during the election season.

“Let us be reminded once more to separate ourselves from partisan politics so that we can focus on our great mission of safeguarding the people and the state. “With the exception of exercising our individual right to vote, we must avoid participating in any party political activities,” he stated.

Centino authorized the AFP engineering units to lead in reconstruction efforts as part of the AFP’s humanitarian aid and disaster response (HADR) operations so that regular combatant forces can focus on internal security operations.

He also directed the unified commands to use and deploy reserve forces as much as possible during HADR operations.

Centino also urged officials to improve operational efficiency, sustain capabilities development, maximize resource utilization, and promote military professionalism and meritocracy.
