According to a member of Turkiye’s Coronavirus Scientific Advisory Board, a new version of the coronavirus Omicron strain discovered in regions of Asia and Europe is spreading considerably quicker than the original variation.

According to Dr. Alper Sener, the BA.2 sub-variant can cause a faster increase in the number of infections because its transmission rate is higher than the BA.1 version.

According to Sener, BA.2 has been gaining traction in nations such as India and Denmark in recent weeks.

“In many countries, BA.2 is becoming the new dominant strain. In the last ten days, it has already exceeded BA.1 in Denmark,” he stated.

However, he added, the new Omicron variant has yet to be discovered in Turkiye.

“The BA.2 descendent lineage, which differs from BA.1 in several of the alterations, especially in the spike protein, is increasing in many nations,” according to the World Health Organization.

“Investigations into the characteristics of BA.2, such as immune escape capabilities and pathogenicity, should be emphasized independently (and in comparison) to BA.1,” according to the WHO.

BA.2 is detected with PCR tests, according to Sener, and has “thus far not resulted in an increase in hospitalization and death rates.”

He said that understanding BA.2’s traits could assist “accelerate ongoing scientific efforts to improve Covid-19 vaccinations.” BA.2 could be more resistant to existing vaccines, he said.
