The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has promised to assist exporters in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Exporters have been assured by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) that government support for the industry will continue to grow even after the pandemic.

Director Christopher Lawrence Arnuco of the Export Marketing Bureau (EMB) said the agency provided some relief to exporters at the start of the pandemic and has continued to build the capacity of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to help them explore opportunities in foreign markets.

“In the case of port handling, we were able to lobby the Department of Transportation and the Philippine Ports Authority to postpone rates on port operation until 2022 through the Export Development Council.” He said in a virtual business conference for Central Luzon on Friday that “they identified major ports in the country to temporarily suspend the imposition of port rate increases.”

Arnuco said the agency has been active in engaging MSMEs across the country for business matching and pushing them into the digital market, even at the height of the pandemic.

He claims that 339 products from 81 local businesses are now live on global online marketplaces like Amazon, eBay, and Etsy.

According to Arnuco, the DTI has been pushing for changes to the Export Development Act that would allow the government to provide insurance to exporters, as the government is now permitted to do so under World Trade Organization rules.

According to Arnuco, the EMB has set its programs for 2022 to boost the country’s export industry in the ‘new normal,’ including conducting market certification training programs for SMEs in the food sector, export promotion activities for high-value coconut products, in-store promotion for halal coconut condiments, and participation in the Taipei International Food Show, Import Goods Fair, and Coffee Show Asian Trade Fair in Korea.

In February, the EMB will hold an in-store promotion in Dubai for meat alternatives and other healthy substitute products and premium items; in March, business matching for the personal care and cosmetics sectors and hygiene industries; in April, business matching for the housewares sector in time for the Hong Kong Lifestyle Sourcing Show; and in June, a business mission on raw materials sourcing opportunity and an exchange mission for Philippine leather goods in Taiwan.

Business matching for Philippine Parts Makers Association with Taiwan buyers in July in time for the Taiwan Auto Parts and Accessories Show; capacity building workshop for garments and textile sector in August; business matching for housewares and leather goods sectors in August in time for the Korea Import Goods Fair; business matching for Philippine Activated Carbon Manufacturers Association with Korean buyers in August in time for the Korea Import Goods Fair; business matching for Philippine Activated Carbon Manufacturers Association with Korean buyers in August in time for the Korea Import Goods

In October, the EMB will participate in the Chamber of Cosmetics Industries of the Philippines’ Beauty and Wellness Manila VX Virtual Trade Expo; in October, business matching for contract furniture and furnishings for the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia; and in November, extensive promotion of Philippine jewelry products in the Korean market in time for participation in the Jewelry Fairs in Korea.

Arnuco urged MSMEs across the country to contact DTI’s regional offices in order to be considered for next year’s programs.
