The Department of Health (DOH) verified the discovery of 28 cases of the Omicron strain of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in three cities and eight communities in Eastern Visayas.

The 28 confirmed cases of highly transmissible variation are among the 90 samples the agency had previously given to the Philippine Genome Center, according to a press conference held late Thursday.

Eight of the cases were from Tacloban City, Leyte; seven from Catbalogan City, Samar; three from Ormoc City, Leyte; two each from Tunga, Leyte and San Jorge, Samar; and one each from the municipalities of Zumarraga, Gandara, and Hinabangan, all in Samar province; Guiuan and Borongan City, both in Eastern Samar; and Macrohon, both in Southern Leyt

Marc Steven Capungcol, DOH Eastern Visayas regional epidemiologist and surveillance unit leader, stated there is a potential that Omicron is prevalent in many regions in the region, but no test findings have been obtained to corroborate this.

“This isn’t to say that there aren’t cases of Omicron in regions that aren’t on the list.” There has been an increase in cases in numerous places, and the transmission pattern is similar to the Omicron type,” Capungcol told reporters.

Except for an unvaccinated 84-year-old female from Samar who succumbed to Covid-19, everyone who tested positive for Omicron has recovered, according to Capungcol.

Eastern Visayas had already documented 59,857 Covid-19 vases, with 56,244 recoveries and 637 deaths as of Friday. The total number of active cases now stands at 2,976.
