The approval of the Marawi Compensation Bill by the Senate strengthens rehabilitation efforts.

The Senate’s passage of the Marawi Compensation Bill is a big step forward in the city of Lanao del Sur’s recovery efforts after the 2017 siege.

Senate Bill 2420, also known as the Marawi Siege Victims Compensation Act, intends to compensate victims of the five-month war between government forces and Daesh-inspired terrorists for the loss or damage of private property.

In a statement released Monday night following the Senate’s 23-0 approval, Task Force Bangon Marawi (TFBM) Chair and Housing Secretary Eduardo Del Rosario praised the bill.

“The Senate’s passage of the Marawi Compensation Bill is a great boost to the morale of our Maranaw brothers and sisters who were affected by the infamous 2017 siege,” said Task Force Bangon Marawi. They’ve been pushing for this legislation for a long time, and maybe it will be passed soon,” Del Rosario added.

“The decision demonstrates that our legislators share our determination to rebuilding a more peaceful and progressive Marawi City,” he continued.

Once enacted into law, it will secure the completion of the government-led rehabilitation of Marawi City, which is currently in its last stages, including the repair of public infrastructure.

Del Rosario stated, “Private individuals will not only rebuild their properties but also their lives.”

In September of last year, the House of Representatives passed its version.

Since July 2020, the TFBM and its 56 implementing agencies have been focusing on rebuilding public infrastructure such as school buildings, road networks, bridges, mosques, public parks, sports and convention facilities, and the public market.

Del Rosario also informed the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) on the ongoing rehabilitation via video conference on Monday.

Mabel Acosta, Chair of the MinDA, asked how her agency and the TFBM might work together to help Marawi City recover more quickly, praising the “amazing success” in the rebuilding efforts.

Del Rosario emphasized the importance of long-term livelihood assistance and a tranquil atmosphere in addition to the restoration efforts.
