The Philippine and Singaporean governments are keen to strengthen bilateral ties in areas such as education, security, and defense.

This was one of the topics covered by Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. and his Singaporean colleague Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan during a bilateral meeting on January 31.

“They praised the two countries’ strong people-to-people ties and expressed optimism for the resumption of travel links once the Covid-19 crisis is passed. They also talked about measures to improve bilateral collaboration in the fields of security and defense, as well as education “In a statement, Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Last year, the two countries agreed to step up collaboration in areas such as marine domain awareness, counterterrorism, defense industry development, intelligence sharing, joint military training, and law enforcement. This is because they understand that global and regional security concerns necessitate a coordinated response from partner countries.

In the meantime, Singapore is one of the 157 countries that can visit the Philippines without a visa.

According to recent government announcements, fully vaccinated Singaporean tourists would be permitted to enter the nation from February 10th, subject to protocol.

The two top diplomats also had a “fruitful exchange of ideas” on the situation in Myanmar and attempts to maintain the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) centrality, unity, and credibility.

Locsin stated in a tweet on Tuesday: “It was a pleasure speaking with you (Vivian Balakrishnan). I’m always learning something new and useful. I won’t be at ease until I see how he reacts to what I say. Knowing and working with him has been a true honor.”

Locsin last visited Singapore in 2019 to reopen the repainted Alkaff Bridge at Robertson Quay.
