The Department of Agriculture’s Fertilizer and Pesticide Authority (DA-FPA) is negotiating with China to lower prices in order to meet the fertilizer requirement for the first planting season this year.

According to FPA chief Wilfredo Roldan during a virtual briefing on Tuesday, the country needs 600,000 metric tons (MT) of fertilizer for the first planting season.

There are presently 200 MT in the DA inventory.

“It is a fact that the Philippines is a net importer of fertilizer, even though we have the PhilPhos (Philippine Phosphate Fertilizer Corporation) and Atlas (Fertilizer Corporation),” he remarked.

Urea, a regularly imported fertilizer, is currently priced at USD900 per ton, which translates from PHP2,400 to PHP3,000 each bag.

It only cost around USD300 in February and March 2021.

According to Roldan, the price increase is due to increased demand in India, Australia, the United States, and Brazil, while major suppliers such as China and Russia are withholding supplies to ensure their domestic needs are met.

Urea is a low-cost nitrogen fertilizer that encourages green foliage development and gives plants a rich appearance.

Roldan stated that when China requested a solid offer, the DA fixed the price at USD500 USD.

“If they agree on that, it will really assist us,” he remarked.

Farm cooperatives had already been advised by DA Secretary William Dar to import fertilizers directly from overseas producers and suppliers.

He also told Roldan that he needed to come up with a balanced strategy that included non-traditional fertilizer.
