Concerns about a new Covid version have prompted EU members to tighten travel restrictions.

Due to worries about the new Covid-19 version, a number of European countries have imposed travel restrictions from southern Africa.

The B.1.1.529 variety, which was initially discovered in South Africa, is said to be more transmissible and has been designated by the World Health Organization as a “Variant of Concern.”

The European Union (EU) announced on Friday that it intends to use the “emergency brake” to halt air travel from the southern African region in order to prevent the spread of the virus in Europe.

The Irish government imposed new limits on travel to and from seven southern African nations on Friday evening, in accordance with the EU’s advice.

The seven nations โ€” Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe โ€” were chosen based on the finding of new variant cases or their geographic proximity to countries where cases have been found, according to the government.

The Department of Foreign Affairs in Ireland has updated its travel advice to “avoid non-essential travel” to certain nations, according to the statement.

Even if they have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, have recovered from the disease in the last six months, or have tested negative within 72 hours of their departure, Irish individuals returning home from these countries will be subjected to stringent home quarantine, according to the statement.

In response to the appearance of the new variety, Italy restricted the arrival of visitors who had visited the seven southern African states named by the Irish government within the preceding two weeks.

Greece has implemented travel restrictions for visitors from nine African nations, including the seven mentioned above, as well as Zambia and Malawi.

According to an e-mailed news release from the Greek health ministry, travel to Greece from the nine nations is only permitted for vital reasons and with a special permit from Greek embassies or embassies that represent Greece in those countries as of November 27.

Upon arrival, all tourists from those countries, including Greek nationals, will be compelled to stay in quarantine for ten days and submit to three Covid-19 tests, regardless of whether they are fully vaccinated.

In other parts of Europe, Cyprus has joined other EU countries in putting an entry ban on migrants traveling from southern Africa, while Spain is exploring restrictions on flights from the region.
