Covid-19 cremations are still free in Davao City.

The Davao City Crematorium is still only serving bodies of people who died of the coronavirus epidemic in 2019. (Covid-19).

The city’s crematorium has provided free services to 291 Covid-19-infected dead since it opened in February of last year.

Sara Duterte, a vice presidential candidate and the mayor of Davao City, said the crematorium was built for the city to meet the requirement of properly disposing of Covid-19-infected cadavers within 12 hours to reduce the number of bodies in hospital morgues during her online show “Sana All For You” on Thursday.

It is important for the city, according to Dondee Eralino, head of City Economic Enterprise, because it ensures safer and more efficient compliance with the Philippine Sanitation Code.

“This is a no-cost service.” There is no such thing as a one-peso bayad (This does not cost a single peso). “Everything is free,” Eralino remarked, referring to hospitals and cremation facilities.

“At talagang malaking tulong ito sa lahat ng mga kababayan natin dito sa Davao (At talagang malaking tulong ito sa lahat ng mga kababayan natin dito sa Davao),” he continued.

The city’s crematorium has a daily capacity of only four bodies. Those who could not be served by the city’s cremation at the height of the pandemic, when the death rate was at its highest, were referred to private facilities, with the government paying the fees.

In a private facility, a cremation normally costs at least PHP30,000.

According to Eralino, the city crematorium’s free services are still confined to bodies afflicted with Covid-19.

The P14.8 million cremation facility was supported by a Bayanihan One grant from the national government, according to Duterte.

Before applying to the Lingap Center of Davao City at the Southern Philippines Medical Center or its satellite offices in Toril, Bunawan, Paquibato, and Marilog, the family of the deceased must have a doctor’s referral for quick cremation, a death certificate, and proof of relationship.
