The Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Battalion will arrive in Eastern Visayas this weekend to assist in ensuring calm and orderly elections in the region, according to the Army’s 8th Infantry Division.

On Saturday, the battalion from the Army’s 10th Infantry Division in Davao City will arrive in Samar.

In a ceremony on Monday at the division headquarters in Catbalogan City, Samar, they will be formally welcomed by important army authorities in the region.

In a phone interview, Maj. Gen. Edgardo De Leon said the unit’s deployment is extremely welcome since it will act as a mobility unit in the region, assisting the Philippine National Police in guaranteeing peaceful and orderly elections, particularly in hotspot areas.

“They are adaptable and will be sent anyplace in our Eastern Visayas area of operation where they are needed.” We have a standby unit in case of an emergency during the election. “The operations of our existing units will not be disrupted by their presence,” De Leon stated.

He added the new battalion’s temporary headquarters will be in Calbayog City, Samar, under the leadership of Col. Juvenal Mark Tayamen.

“Because they will not be introduced to any local candidates, we are confident that they are apolitical.” They are new to the region and have never met any local officials, unlike our soldiers now stationed there,” De Leon noted.

The battalion was stationed in Davao in 2016 to assist in the fight against the New People’s Army (NPA), particularly in the Paquibato District, a hub of armed rebels in the city’s outskirts.

The 3rd Infantry Battalion of the Army’s 10th Infantry Division eliminated the NPA guerilla front 54 operating in Davao City in 2019, according to the 10th Infantry Division’s Facebook page.

In Davao City, the unit knocked out the NPA guerilla front 56 in 2020.

The NPA sub-regional committee 5 of the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee was likewise dismantled by the unit.
