Embassies are urging stranded Filipinos to contact them in order to join a flight back to the Philippines.
Filipinos who have been stranded overseas owing to travel restrictions imposed by the Omicron version of the coronavirus are asked to call the nearest Philippine Embassy or Consulate to arrange for a ticket back to Manila as soon as possible.
According to the latest monitoring by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), roughly 50 Filipinos have been stranded in Europe and 49 in South Africa since the red list was announced.
In a Laging Handa briefing, Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Sarah Lou Arriola said, “This is a little bit tricky, so we need the assistance of our kababayans because they have to transfer from one country to another to be able to board the repatriation flight.”
“Bayanihan special repatriation flights account for the majority of these. Because they are few in number, they must board a commercial airline to be considered Bayanihan.”
Two of Arriola’s European locations are in talks with a Dutch aviation business to arrange a “Bayanihan trip” for December 13 with the Netherlands as a possible transit point.
South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, and Italy were all added to the country’s red list.
Travelers from nations on the red list are temporarily restricted from entering the Philippines due to coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) high-risk zones.
All inbound international passengers from these countries are forbidden from entering the Philippines, with the exception of Filipinos returning on special repatriation and “Bayanihan flights.”
