Beginning January 10, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) will invalidate all unclaimed passports due to be released in December 2020 or earlier.

Those who have yet to claim their passports can do so at the DFA Consular Office where they were processed until January 7, 2022 (Friday), according to an alert issued by the agency Thursday night.

Those who have not been able to claim their passports by January 7, 2022, must file a fresh passport application after obtaining an unclaimed passport certificate from DFA Aseana or the DFA Consular Office where they were processed.

According to DFA Department Order No. 2021-012 on the Disposal of Unclaimed and Spoiled Passports, “a passport left unclaimed by its possessor one year after the day it was received by DFA Aseana, the Consular Office, or the Foreign Services Post (FSP) shall be canceled.”

Passports issued after December 2020 are unaffected and can still be obtained at the DFA Consular Office, according to the DFA.

While there is no penalty for claiming a passport later, the public is advised to do so within 30 days of the scheduled release date.

Applicants may authorize another person to apply for a passport on their behalf, as long as the approved person meets the DFA’s online requirements.
